8 Weeks Pregnant with Monochorionic - Diamniotic Twins

Updated: May 20, 2020

Monochorionic - Diamniotic Twins mean that the twins are identical, coming from the same fertilized egg that split into two future fetuses, and share a placenta. They have their own amniotic sacs though. This does come with some possible complications but I am feeling quite confident that we are all going to have a wonderfully healthy pregnancy.

I am now 9 weeks pregnant but I wanted to give an update on how the eighth week went. This was the hardest week I had of this pregnancy so far. I felt badly most days of the eighth week.

The exciting news was that the twins have started communicating with each other at eight weeks. Growing their spectacular bond already!

Heart rates: I had an ultrasound to confirm viability of the pregnancy and to confirm that the babies have separate amniotic sacs so I was able to see their hearts beating. Baby A has a heart rate of 176 and Baby B has a heart rate of 153. Both were very strong and ahead of schedule in their growth, so this mama is over the moon.

Morning Sickness: At 8 weeks the morning sickness was real. I was nauseous almost all the time but found products that helped see Tips for Nausea.

Fatigue: I felt like my body was always drained of nutrients for the twins and even the smallest movements felt like they required so much effort. I did not get much done around the house until the very end of the week.

Vaginal Discharge: Not much has changed in the quality and quantity of discharge since week 6.

Bloating & Gas: The bloating reached an all time high in week 8 while I looked like 9 months pregnant for a few days. I have been burping since before I knew I was pregnant and this has not slowed down either. My husband frequently calls me a frog because walking down the stairs I will burp with every step I take.

Constipation: This came and went for me this week. I have Crohn's Disease so I there is such a difference in bowel movements now that I am pregnant, most of the time I am not as frequent and usually my tummy feels better than it did pre-pregnancy.

Here is a photo from this weeks ultrasound. My babies are growing so quickly, still not too clear yet because they are so tiny but so perfect!
